Founded abroad, funded and staffed where?

Snapshot of 14 October 2026 · refreshed weekly

Venture-backed companies from Israel and India: where they are registered, whose money backs them, and where their new jobs are. Listed companies, 5,000+ employee groups and local arms of multinationals are left out, so this is about companies founded there, not companies that merely operate there.

United Kingdom, France, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden and Spain are measured too, and join this page once a fresh random sample of their companies passes our quality check.

Does registering in the US change it?

Within each country: companies registered in the US against companies registered at home. Funding by company; hiring by postings (the share of their new roles in the origin country). Shown only where each side has at least 20 companies with investor country known, or 150 postings.

Is the mix changing?

The investor mix of each country’s rounds, by the year they were announced, 2019 to 2025 and 2026 so far. Each round counts once, classed by its own investors. Read the shares, not the heights: our coverage of rounds grows sharply in recent years, so a column says how that year’s recorded rounds split, not how many there were.

Rounds with investor country known, by announcement year; the number under each column is how many. The last column is the year to 14 Oct. Columns resting on fewer than 20 rounds are faded.

How these numbers are built

How to read it

Funding: companies (or dollars of rounds) backed only by home-country investors, only by US investors, by both, or by neither. A round’s dollars go to the mix of its own investors. Hiring: companies posting more than half of their new roles at home, in the US, elsewhere, or none of the three (split). The thin bar under each country shows registration among its venture-backed companies: US, home, grey not known.

How registration is decided

  • US: an SEC Form D filing with a US state of incorporation, or a US issuer address, filed by officers who live in the origin country; or a US headquarters for a company whose origin is verified; or Inc / Corp / LLC in the name.
  • Home: Form D with a home-country jurisdiction, a UK Companies House or Israeli registry record, or a home legal form in the name (GmbH, SAS, BV, AB, SL, Pvt Ltd, Ltd).
  • Most companies have none of these and count as not known.

Read with care

  • A registry record proves a home entity exists, not that it is the parent: many Israeli and UK startups are a US parent with a local subsidiary.
  • Inc / LLC in the name was right for about half of a hand-read sample.
  • Hiring covers only companies whose careers sites we read: 1–5% of venture-backed companies per country (India 1%, Israel 5%). Bars resting on fewer than 20 companies (or rounds) are faded.
  • Venture-backed means at least one labelled equity round (pre-seed, seed, Series A and on, growth) or a venture investor on record; a filing, grant or loan alone does not count, nor does a single investor seen only on a scraped portfolio page.
  • Dollar shares cover rounds whose investors’ countries we know; the rest is shown as unattributed. Where one or two deals carry a country’s dollars, the bar says so, and a share that moves more than 20 points without its largest deal is not shown.
  • Debt, grants, secondaries, IPOs, acquisitions and fund rounds are left out. A round reported twice (same company, same amount, same or next quarter) is counted once, and rounds taken only from name-matched aggregator pages are left out.
